Being at Jolly Chinese

Learning is a combination of acquiring academic knowledge of reading, writing and arithmetic, and fostering one’s character

Rao (2012) in his article on the myths about soft skills explained that these are “polite and pleasing ways of presenting to others and are mostly related to personality, attitude and behaviour” (p. 50).

Torrey (2015) in her article on the purpose of education, persuade us that children should be empowered to be lifelong learners and to manage their own learning because the world is changing rapidly and it is important that children adapt quickly.

The learning experience at Jolly Chinese starts once the students enter the door and ends when the children no longer need our guidance. We set a strict standard for the quality of our physical learning environment, the capabilities of our teachers, and the cooperativeness of parents at home.

Character Development

We see ourselves as an education centre and not just an extra tuition class for children. At the core of our education lays the fundamental belief that it is our responsibility to nurture students’ characters by honing their soft skills. We are more eager to see progress made in characters than their academic achievements. Our pre-school and lower primary children are expected to help one another in learning through playing. We also aim to stimulate their creativity through our unique teaching styles. Outside of classes and during their breaks, we see the responsibility and patience displayed by our older kids when playing together with the younger ones.

Inclusiveness

It is our role to foster the skills of respect, empathy, and cooperation at our centre. Jolly Chinese is an inclusive education centre where children of all backgrounds are welcomed and treated with equity. We provide an environment where everyone can safely learn together with their peers and bond in ordinary lives. None of our students had and will be required to have a separate learning environment from their friends due to reasons beyond their control. We have extensive experience working with children that have special education needs and can provide guidance on their learning.

High-Scope Learning

Teachers are the facilitators in learning. We pass on our knowledge to students and also provide the opportunities for children to fail in order to learn from their mistakes.
